Knitting where every panel is knitted to final shape — no cutting, with visible fashioning marks.
Description
Fully fashioned describes a knitting technique in which the front panel, back panel and sleeves of a garment are knitted directly to their final shape on a flat-knitting machine. Unlike cut-and-sew (where large panels are cut and sewn together), shape, curves and fit are created by targeted increases and decreases of stitches along the edges.
Characteristic are the visible fashioning marks — usually a small diagonal wave of stitches 1-2 stitches from the edge. The technique is used mainly for high-end pullovers, polo shirts, cardigans and hosiery. Base materials: merino, cashmere, cotton, wool blends; gauges 7-30.
Advantages: no material waste (more sustainable), no seam bulk at the silhouette, better fit, premium look. Downsides: slower production, higher cost. Brands: John Smedley, Sunspel, Boglioli, Loro Piana, Missoni. Care depends on material, usually wool cycle 30 °C.
