Half cardigan knit
Also known as: Half cardigan stitch, Royal rib
Rib knit binding with one-sided tuck — voluminous, airy, with subtly different reverse.
Description
Half cardigan knit is a rib binding in which one needle bed is knitted normally while the other forms tuck stitches. Only one side carries the tuck stitches — hence the name "half". The reverse therefore shows a visibly different structure than the face: horizontal zigzag lines rather than uniform ribs.
Gauges 5-14; typical materials: wool, merino, cashmere, cotton, alpaca. Weights 300-500 g/m². The tuck stitches trap air and create loft, so the fabric appears voluminous, warm and light. Half cardigan is more elastic than double rib and drapes more softly.
Classic uses: chunky sweaters, cardigans, ladies' tops, soft winter pullovers. The related full-cardigan stitch has tuck on both beds and is even more voluminous. Brands: Sunspel, Jamieson & Smith, many Scandinavian labels. Care: wool cycle 30 °C, dry flat, do not wring.
