Nicki velour
Also known as: Cotton velour knit, Nicky velvet
Soft, short-pile cotton circular knitted velour with a dense, velvety face.
Description
Nicki is a one-side brushed or pile-yarn knitted cotton circular fabric whose face shows a short, dense pile of 1-2 mm. Unlike terry, the pile lies cut or brushed flat; the hand is velvety and warm, similar to a very fine velour. The base is usually a single jersey of 80-100% cotton, often complemented with 5-10% polyester or elastane for shape retention and stretch.
Fabric weights range from 220 to 320 g/m². The material is produced on circular machines at 18-24 gauge; after knitting the pile side is either brushed or knitted with a separate pile yarn and then sheared. Nicki insulates well, is skin-friendly and stores less moisture than classic terry.
In Germany, Nicki is present above all in babywear and loungewear — rompers, pyjamas, soft pullovers, kids' bathrobes. It also dominated the retro sportswear of the 1970s and 80s (velour tracksuits). Care: 30-40 °C, turn inside out, gentle tumble, no fabric softener.
