Pointelle knit

Fine knit with deliberately-placed transfer holes that create subtle ajour or floral patterns.
Description
Pointelle (also ajour knit or petit-point knit) is a fine-gauge knit in which individual stitches are deliberately not closed into a full loop. Instead of forming a new loop the stitch is transferred to an adjacent needle (transfer stitch) — creating a fine hole at that spot. Placing these transfer holes in rhythmic sequences produces delicate diamond patterns, floral shapes, chevron stripes or lace-like effects.
Production is done on jacquard-controlled fine flat-knitting machines (Shima Seiki, Stoll) at typical gauges of E12 to E18. The fabric is elastic, light (140–220 g/m2), airy yet still effective at blouse temperatures because the holes vent heat in a controlled way. Classic uses: children's and baby bodies, women's fine knits (cardigans, long sleeves, pyjamas), underwear and loungewear collections, summer sweaters. Increasingly used in sports baselayers as well, where the pattern improves moisture wicking on the back.
