AC-coated (acrylic)

Acrylic coating as an affordable alternative to PU; waterproof but less breathable.
Description
AC coatings use acrylic copolymers (butyl acrylate, ethyl acrylate) applied by knife or foam onto the back of the fabric. Add-on weights are 20-40 g/m2. Advantages over PU: lower cost and better hydrolysis resistance.
Hydrostatic head typically 1,500-3,000 mm per EN 20811 / ISO 811, MVTR low (1,000-3,000 g/m2/24h). AC coatings feel stiffer, rustle more and yellow with age. Used in budget rainwear, workwear and cheap tent inners.
Ageing: less peeling than PU but UV embrittlement. Residual monomers are critical; OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 sets limits (< 1 mg/kg for acrylamide). PFAS-freedom requires fluorine-free DWR top-coat.
