Bonding
Also known as: Laminating, Fabric bonding
Joining two or more fabrics via adhesive or heat activation into a composite.
Description
Bonding joins two or more fabric layers into a composite. Common techniques: PUR hot-melt adhesive (dot, mesh or full-surface), reactive adhesives, flame lamination (foam interlayer), thermoplastic films (TPU, PES) and ultrasonic bonding.
Applications: 3-layer softshell (shell + membrane + fleece), 2.5-layer rain jackets (shell + membrane + printed inner), bonded (not sewn) seam constructions, seamless sports bras, reflective stripes on high-vis vests. Bond strength typically 5-25 N/5 cm per DIN 53357 (peel test).
Ageing: delamination via hydrolysis (PUR), heat shock, mechanical load. Ester-based adhesives hydrolyse faster; ether-based are more robust. bluesign®-certified systems use solvent-free hot-melts. PFC-free by design. Recycling issue: mono-material bonding (polyester on polyester) helps end-of-life reuse.
