Fleece / batt
Also known as: Batting, Wadding
Loose fibre web used as thermal insulation, wadding or preform for non-wovens.
Description
Fleece batt refers both to the raw web (fibre web after carding) and to finished wadding (insulation batt). It consists of loosely laid fibres (polyester, polyacrylic, wool, sometimes cotton) with high air content (70-95 %) and low density (0.01-0.03 g/cm3).
Metrics: basis weight 40-400 g/m2, loft (thickness at low pressure) 5-40 mm, thermal resistance Rct per ISO 11092 typically 0.1-0.5 m2K/W. Common fibre forms: hollow fibre (more air), siliconised (slippery, more stable), crimped fibre.
For quilted jackets, batts are sewn between shell and lining (channels, boxes, chambers). Ageing: compression under sustained load, felting with moisture + friction, migration through needle holes. Wash at max 30-40 °C, tumble to fluff up. Recycled polyester batt (rPET) is standard on new products; PFC-free by design.
