Ultralight Gore-Tex laminate with no face fabric — just an ePTFE membrane and inner tricot; sheds water instantly, phased out in 2023 in favour of new PFC-free membranes.
Description
ShakeDry was a special construction by W. L. Gore & Associates in which the microporous ePTFE membrane forms the outside of the jacket — with no protective face fabric. This made ShakeDry exceptionally light (jackets around 130 g in size M), extremely water-shedding and no DWR treatment was needed. Typical use: ultralight rain jackets for road cycling, trail running and fastpacking.
Downsides: the membrane is mechanically vulnerable on the outside — backpack straps, hook-and-loop fasteners and rock abrade it quickly; ShakeDry jackets were explicitly not approved for mountaineering or backpacking. Known variants: Gorewear C5 GTX ShakeDry, C7 GTX ShakeDry (cycling), Adidas Terrex Agravic Pro ShakeDry (running), Salomon Bonatti ShakeDry, Arc'teryx Norvan SL ShakeDry. With Gore's 2023-announced exit from PFC-based ePTFE membranes in the consumer segment, ShakeDry has been largely discontinued and replaced by new PFC-free laminates (Gore-Tex ePE, Gore-Tex Active with new face fabric).
