Nano-silver finish
Also known as: Silver nanoparticles, AgNP finish, SilverPlus
Antimicrobial textile finish with metallic silver nanoparticles (< 100 nm).
Description
Nano-silver finishes use metallic silver nanoparticles (typically 10–100 nm) as a biocide on textiles. Application: padding, dip-coating or spraying from aqueous dispersion. Loading: 10–200 mg Ag/kg fabric. Like all silver finishes it acts via released Ag+ ions that damage cell membranes and enzymes of odour-causing bacteria.
Upsides: effective against Staphylococcus, E. coli, Candida. Downsides: silver washes out (up to 50 % after 10 wash cycles on non-fixed systems) and enters waste-water treatment; regulatorily contested (EU BPR list). Alternatives with tightly bonded silver chloride (Polygiene, Sanitized) are more wash-resistant. Uses: sport socks, sport underwear, workwear.
