Non-woven
Also known as: Nonwoven fabric
Textile sheet made of fibres bonded by mechanical, thermal or chemical means, not woven or knitted.
Description
Non-woven is a textile sheet made from individual fibres bonded by mechanical hooking (needle-punch), thermal fusing (thermobond, spunbond), chemical binders (latex) or hydro-entanglement (spunlace). Neither woven nor knitted.
Metrics: basis weight 15-500 g/m2, tensile strength per EN 29073-3, thickness per ISO 5084, water absorption per WSP 10.1. Types: spunbond PP (single-use surgical gowns), meltblown PP (fine filters, N95 masks), SMS laminate (spunbond-meltblown-spunbond).
Textile use: interlinings (collar, cuff reinforcement), insulation (Thinsulate®), filters, thermal padding. Pros: low cost, defined thickness, no fraying. Cons: lower tear strength than wovens, mostly single-use. Ageing: UV degradation, fibre shedding under mechanical load. Newer rPET non-wovens support circular economy.
