Pertex Shield Air (detail)
Also known as: Pertex Shield Air 2.5-layer, Shield Air membrane
Ultralight, air-permeable 2.5-layer construction from the Pertex Shield family — high breathability, waterproof at around 10,000 mm water column and long-lasting DWR treatment, ideal for trail running and fast-and-light jackets.
Description
Pertex Shield Air is the air-permeable, extra-breathable variant of the Pertex Shield membrane family from British manufacturer Pertex (Mitsui). The fabric is usually built as a 2.5-layer laminate: a very light ripstop shell from polyamide or polyester filament, a hydrophilic PU membrane and a printed or dotted inner coating instead of a full lining.
Unlike classic solid membranes (e.g. Pertex Shield or Shield Pro), Shield Air offers controlled air permeability. Moisture escapes noticeably faster, while the material still holds a water column of around 10,000 mm in the rain. Typical fields of use are trail-running jackets, ultralight bike jackets and emergency rain shells for mountain sports.
- 2.5-layer construction — very low weight (jackets sometimes <200 g)
- Air permeable, therefore very high MVTR value
- Water column around 10,000 mm, DWR treatment as standard
- Not suitable for very long continuous rain — mountain rescue prefers Shield Pro
