Pertex Shield
Also known as: Pertex Shield+, Pertex Shield Air
Waterproof 2.5- or 3-layer laminates built around a hydrophilic PU membrane; brand of Mitsui/Pertex.
Description
Pertex Shield is the rain-protection line from the British-Japanese Pertex brand (now in the Mitsui Bussan Woolworth portfolio). Its core is a hydrophilic polyurethane membrane: solid (not microporous), moving water vapour by molecular diffusion.
Variants: Shield (2.5-layer, packable), Shield+ (more durable), Shield Air (air-permeable to fight overheating). Water column 10,000–20,000 mm, RET 6–13. Upsides: cheaper than GORE-TEX, very light, PFC-free options. Downside: PU membranes swell more than ePTFE at high humidity. Used by Rab, Montane, Mountain Equipment.
