PrimaLoft Bio

PrimaLoft Bio is the insulation series introduced in 2018 by the US fibre technologist PrimaLoft (Latham, NY), being the first synthetic wadding on the market to combine 100 percent recycled polyester with defined biodegradability. Base is a modified PET fibre whose surface has been made attractive to naturally occurring microorganisms (bacteria, enzymes) - while the fibre remains completely stable in the dry, low-oxygen wear environment (worn jacket), degradation in a landfill or marine environment starts within a few years.

Certified test protocols: ASTM D5511 (anaerobic landfill conditions, up to 84% breakdown in 1,278 days) and ASTM D6691 (seawater, 55% in 400 days). By comparison: conventional polyester degrades only 1-3 percent under the same conditions. Bio insulation is available in several grades (Silver Bio, Gold Bio, Down Blend Bio); technical properties (CLO, loft, compression) are identical to the non-biodegradable equivalents.

Brand users: Helly Hansen (Odin Stretch Hooded Insulator), Vaude, Norrona, Houdini, Salewa, L.L. Bean. Of interest to the textile industry is compatibility with the Higg Index (fibre score well below conventional PES) and meeting the planned EU recycled-content quota for fillings from 2030. Important: 'biodegradable' is not a care instruction - jackets with PrimaLoft Bio fill last as long in normal use as conventional ones. Degradation only starts at end of life.
