Schoeller c_change (bionic climate membrane)
Also known as: c_change membrane
Bionic membrane from Swiss Schoeller Textil AG that opens and closes its pores in response to temperature — inspired by the pine cone; regulates water-vapour transport to body temperature.
Description
Schoeller c_change is a waterproof, breathable polymer membrane that mimics the pine cone principle: when the cone warms up its scales spread apart; when it cools they close again. On the molecular level, c_change is built from a thermo-reactive polymer that expands as body or ambient temperature rises, enlarging its diffusion channels — sweat vapour is carried outward more quickly. When temperature falls, the polymer chains contract and the membrane becomes tighter, reducing heat loss.
c_change therefore actively regulates the microclimate at the body: more vapour transport under exertion, more heat retention at rest. Constructed as a PU-based system, it is permanently waterproof (typically 20'000 mm water column) and Schoeller in Sevelen (Switzerland) offers it as a coating or laminate for outer fabrics used in ski, bike, trekking and outdoor jackets. c_change is bluesign-certified and PFC-free. Brands including Mammut, Odlo, Ortovox, Vaude and Rossignol build the membrane into premium models. For the wearer this means less internal condensation on the ascent and no clammy feeling during a break.
