Storm flap / wind flap
Also known as: Storm flap, Zip cover
Inner or outer fabric strip behind a zipper preventing wind and rain ingress.
Description
The storm flap is a constructive detail at jacket closures: a narrow fabric strip (typically 25-40 mm wide) runs behind or over the zip, sealing the inherent gap against wind and light rain. Secured by hook-and-loop, snaps or magnetic snaps.
Variants: simple inner flap (basic), double flap inside and out (full weather cover), integrated flap under a waterproof zip (YKK AquaGuard®). Required for EN 343 PPE rainwear from class 3 upwards. On EN ISO 20471 high-vis vests the flap is executed in signal colour without breaking the reflective strips.
Construction: laminated or cut from separate DWR-treated fabric. Note: hook-and-loop loses grip after 500-2,000 cycles; snaps last 5,000+ cycles. Ageing via abrasion and detergent: the storm flap is the most common wear point on jackets.
