Description

Coir is obtained from the mesocarp between the shell and the flesh of the coconut Cocos nucifera. A distinction is made between brown coir from ripe nuts (coarse, stiff, dark — for brushes and mats) and white coir from unripe nuts (finer, lighter — for yarns and ropes). After retting in fresh or seawater the fibres are separated by hand or decorticator.

Roughly 1 million tonnes of coir are produced worldwide each year; India, Sri Lanka and Vietnam are the largest producers. Coir is resistant to salt water, fungi and rot, elastic, flame-retardant and biodegradable. In textiles it is mainly encountered as coconut mats and rubber-backed doormats, in horticulture, erosion control and in natural-latex mattresses. It is too coarse for clothing.

  • Two main types: brown coir (ripe) and white coir (unripe)
  • Resistant to salt water, fungi and rot
  • Classic: doormats, brushes, coir ropes, mattresses
  • Too coarse for clothing — no apparel fibre
