Description

Jute is obtained from the stems of the plants Corchorus olitorius and Corchorus capsularis. The main growing areas are Bangladesh and India, together supplying over 90 % of world production. The fibre is coarse, glossy golden-brown and spun into hard-wearing yarn.

Classic uses include coffee and rice sacks, carpet backings, geotextiles, cords, wall coverings and packaging. Jute is biodegradable, cheap and relatively eco-friendly, but has moderate tensile strength and low UV resistance. In apparel it appears in sustainable summer fashion and as a blend.

  • Second-most important natural fibre by volume after cotton
  • Coarse hand, glossy golden-brown colour
  • Biodegradable, very affordable
  • Main use: sacks, carpets, geotextiles
