Description

Sheep's wool is obtained by shearing and comes worldwide mainly from Australia, New Zealand, China, the UK and South America. The fibre is made of keratin, has a natural crimp and is covered with scales. This structure provides high loft, good thermal insulation and characteristic elasticity.

Wool can absorb up to 30 % of its own weight in moisture without feeling wet and neutralises odour. It is naturally flame-retardant and self-cleaning. Downsides are felting risk with incorrect washing and animal-welfare concerns (mulesing). Certifications such as RWS (Responsible Wool Standard), ZQ or Kbt document fair standards.
