5-thread overlock (safety stitch)
Also known as: Safety stitch, 5-thread serger
Combination of overlock and chain stitch in one seam – standard for jeans, workwear and load-bearing trousers.
Description
The 5-thread overlock (ISO 4915 class 516) consists of a 3-thread overlock and a parallel double chain stitch (401), sewn in a single pass. The chain stitch carries the load, the overlock finishes the edge. Strength 100–180 N/cm at 20–35 % stretch.
It is the classic construction seam for jeans inseams, work trousers, cargo pants, dungarees and overalls. Sewn on safety-stitch machines such as Pegasus M900, Juki MO-6900 or Yamato AZ8500SD-Y5. The most common seam in workwear and denim.
