Backstitch (hand seam)
Also known as: Back stitch, Hand backstitch
Hand stitch producing a continuous line on the face side – the strongest joining seam sewable by hand.
Description
In the backstitch the needle is brought back a short distance into the previous stitch each time, producing a continuous line on the face similar to a machine lockstitch. On the reverse, longer overlapping stitches form. The seam is strong, only slightly stretchable and can be unpicked cleanly.
Used for repair work, historical costumes, hand-sewn hems, mending burst seams as well as in crafts and cosplay. Tools: hand-sewing needle size 7–9, silk or cotton thread Nm 40–60.
