Basting stitch
Also known as: Tacking stitch, Baste stitch
Temporary hand stitch with long stitches (10–30 mm) – holds layers in position for later machine sewing.
Description
The basting stitch is a running stitch of unusually long length (10–30 mm) that temporarily fixes fabric layers. Sewn with fine cotton basting thread in a contrasting colour so it can easily be removed after the final seam.
Classic for fitting suits, blazers, dresses, complex seam layouts, zipper installation and padding preparation. In industrial confection often replaced by pins or removable adhesive films, but still standard in bespoke tailoring.
