Blanket stitch
Also known as: Blanket stitch, Buttonhole stitch
Hand stitch that overcasts raw edges and decorates them at the same time – classic on blanket and felt work.
Description
The blanket stitch (buttonhole stitch when densely worked) is sewn along a raw edge: the needle enters vertically and passes through the previous thread loop, producing a row of small loops along the edge. It finishes and decorates simultaneously.
Uses: edges of wool blankets and felt items, appliqués on childrenswear, decorative borders on towels, farmhouse-look cushion edges, eco felt coasters and soft toys. In dense form it is also the hand-sewn buttonhole stitch.
