Chain stitch

Single-thread chain seam – stretchy but easily unravelled; typical for cartridges and bag closures.
Description
The chain stitch (stitch class 101 per DIN 61400) is formed with only one needle thread that builds a chain of loops on the underside. It is highly elastic (up to 60 % stretch) but can be fully unravelled by pulling the thread end – hence the standard for grain-sack closures. Stitch density 3–5 per cm; strength 30–50 N/cm.
In apparel manufacturing, chain stitch is used for decorative topstitching, attaching lines in trouser inseams and temporary basting. Sample products at Clubmartin: chinos with chain-stitch inside hem (denim look) and coffee sack packaging. Machines: Union Special 51500, Juki MH-380.
