Description

The coverlock machine (also coverstitch, cover hem) uses two to four needles plus a lower looper to form a special stitch: parallel straight rows on the top of the fabric and a criss-crossing looper thread on the underside, forming a cover or overlock stitch. The seam is highly stretchable and flat.

Coverlocks are standard in industrial production of T-shirt hems, sleeve cuffs, sweatpants waistbands, hoodie hems and underwear – wherever an elastic, flat and neat-looking seam is required on stretch fabrics such as jersey, interlock or rib. Pure coverlocks (without edge trim) differ from combo machines that also do overlock.

  • 2-needle cover (twin needle cover): two visible parallel rows
  • 3-needle cover: three visible rows, wider hold (sweatshirt cuffs)
  • Industrial models: Pegasus W664, Kansai Special, Yamato, Juki MF series
  • Needle spacing typically 3, 4.8 or 6.4 mm (1/8", 3/16", 1/4")
