DIN EN ISO 13935 (seam tensile strength)
Also known as: ISO 13935, Seam strength standard, Grab seam test
Testing standard for the maximum tensile strength of a seam – basis for conformity claims in garments, workwear and PPE.
Description
The DIN EN ISO 13935 series defines the tensile strength test for seams in textile fabrics. Part 1 (strip method) measures the peak force in newtons on a 50 × 200 mm specimen until the seam breaks; Part 2 (grab method) uses a 100 mm wide specimen with only 25 mm clamping jaws and gives higher, more realistic values. Testing at 20 °C / 65 % RH after 24 h conditioning.
The standard underlies requirements in EN ISO 20471 (high-visibility clothing, ≥60 N), EN ISO 11612 (heat protection, ≥225 N), EN ISO 13688 (general PPE, ≥60 N for construction seams). Test institutes such as Hohenstein, TÜV Rheinland and Intertek certify per this standard; the test rig is typically a Zwick Roell Z050 or MTS Criterion 43.
