Flat-felled seam
Also known as: Flat felled seam, Fell seam, Jeans seam
Load-bearing, twice-folded joining seam without raw edges – the classic jeans and workwear seam.
Description
The flat-felled seam is a three-dimensionally folded joining seam: one allowance is folded around the other and secured with a second visible topstitch (typically with a twin needle). No raw edges appear on the reverse. The seam is virtually tear-proof (150–250 N/cm strength) and lies flat.
It is the standard seam on jeans inseams, plaid shirts, chinos, workwear jackets, dungarees and rugged kids' trousers. Sewn on flat-felled machines with folder attachment (Union Special 35800, Juki MS-1190) using twisted cotton or polyester core-spun yarn.
