Folded hem (double-turned hem)

Hem in which the raw edge is folded twice and secured by lockstitch – classic on shirts, blouses and tea towels.
Description
In a folded hem the raw edge is turned twice (classic 5 mm + 10 mm, on fine blouses 3 mm + 6 mm) and secured with a lockstitch (class 301). The raw edge is fully enclosed inside the fold – no fraying, no visible allowance. On industrial machines, a folder attachment (Suisei S31, Union Special AM-2 Folder) forms the fold automatically while sewing.
Standard hem for shirts, blouses, bed linen, tea towels, cotton bags, table napkins, flags and curtains. Very fine fabrics switch to a single-fold rolled hem; heavy fabrics to the blind hem. Advantages: very clean, sturdy hem, wash-fast, no overlock required.
