French seam
Also known as: French seam, English seam
Two-pass seam that fully encloses the allowances – ideal for fine fabrics such as chiffon or voile.
Description
The French seam is sewn in two passes: fabrics are first joined right sides out with a narrow 3 mm allowance, then turned and the allowance is enclosed from the wrong side at 5–7 mm. Result: a clean, closed seam without visible fibres and without any overlock.
Used for blouses, summer shirts, chiffon dresses, nightwear, baby bodies and fine women's blazer inner seams. Drawbacks: higher production time, unsuitable for thick or stiff fabrics.
