Hong Kong finish
Also known as: Hong Kong finish, Hong Kong binding
Seam allowances are individually bound with a narrow bias strip of lining fabric — a premium inside finish without overlock.
Description
The Hong Kong finish (also Hong Kong binding) is a premium and labour-intensive inside finish for unlined jackets, suits and trousers. Every open seam allowance is individually wrapped with a narrow bias strip of fine lining fabric (silk, Bemberg or viscose) and stitched invisibly in the ditch.
The result is a clean, colour-coordinated interior without the typical overlocked look of industrial ready-to-wear. Effort is well above standard overlocked edges and is a hallmark of British and Italian bespoke tailoring. Common on summer blazers, tuxedo trousers and women's suits in half-linen or wool flannel.
- Individual seam allowances wrapped in bias binding
- No overlock — very clean, fabric interior
- Heavy handwork share, hallmark of bespoke and premium ready-to-wear
- Ideal for unlined summer suits and women's suits
