Piping
Also known as: Corded piping, Welting
English synonym for piping, usually cord-cored – standard in sportswear and upholstery.
Description
Piping is the international umbrella term for all inserted decorative and reinforcement tapes with or without a welting cord. Typically a cotton or polyester core 2–4 mm thick, wrapped in fabric or synthetic-leather strips. Piping accentuates silhouettes – e.g. on sleeve seams of cycling jerseys, side panels of sports jackets or polo cuffs.
Sewn with a piping foot on lockstitch machines (PFAFF 1246, Juki DDL-8700), lockstitch 301, 4 stitches per cm. Sample products at Clubmartin: retro cycling jersey with contrast piping, windbreaker, polo cuffs with double piping. Strength 100–160 N/cm. Language-wise it often differs from the German 'Paspel' only in the trade term.
