Raw edge

Also known as: Unfinished edge, Cut edge

Deliberately open, fray-allowed fabric edge as a design feature, mainly on sweatshirts.

~1 min read By Christian Habert Fact-checked by Clubmartin Textile EditorialAI-assisted Last reviewed: Sources (2)

Description

The raw edge differs from a raw cut in that the edge is deliberately left open as a design feature and allowed to fray. Classic on sweatshirt hems, fleece-hoodie neck facings and cut-off shorts. Before the final wash the edge is stabilised with a 1 cm zig-zag (class 304) at 3–4 stitches per cm to keep fraying controlled.

Preferred on French terry, loopback and sweatshirt fabrics at 300–450 g/m². Sample products at Clubmartin: organic sweatshirt with raw-edge neck, loopback hoodie, boxy T-shirt. Strength of the stabilising zig-zag 40–60 N/cm.
