Running stitch

Simplest hand stitch – needle passes evenly through fabric, equal length top and bottom.
Description
The running stitch is the simplest hand stitch: the needle is passed through the fabric at even intervals (3–8 mm) without going back. The seam has low load capacity but is fast to sew and ideal for gathering.
Used for gathering seams on skirts and blouses, hand quilting (Sashiko), appliqués and temporary basting of pleats before machine sewing. In Japan the Sashiko running stitch (white yarn on indigo) is even a decorative motif in its own right.
