Sealed hem
Also known as: Taped hem, Heat-sealed hem
Hem edge bonded with thermoplastic tape instead of stitched – waterproof, seam-free.
Description
In the sealed hem, the fabric edge is not stitched but bonded via a thermoplastic seam tape (Bemis 3410, Sealon, GORE-SEAM) under heat and pressure (110–160 °C, 3–5 bar). Result: fully waterproof, no needle holes, very flat. Standard in 3-layer laminates such as GORE-TEX Pro and PERTEX Shield.
In sportswear with a flatlock look, butted edges are ultrasonically welded and sealed with a thin TPU film for low-friction baselayers. Strength 60–100 N/cm. Sample products at Clubmartin: 3-layer rain jacket, triathlon suit, cycling shorts with thermobonded leg finish.
