Seam load analysis
Also known as: Seam strength testing, Seam load testing
Systematic test of seam strength, seam slippage and failure mode per DIN EN ISO 13935 — basis for workwear and PPE.
Description
Seam load analysis determines the tensile force at which a seam fails and where the failure occurs. The two-part standard is DIN EN ISO 13935: Part 1 (strip tensile test) and Part 2 (grab tensile test). Specimens are clamped in a tensile tester and loaded at constant speed (typically 50–100 mm/min) until failure.
Four typical failure modes are recorded: thread break (sewing thread breaks first, the desired mode for PPE), fabric break (fabric tears next to the seam), seam pull-out (thread pulls through the fabric, often with over-sized needles) and seam slippage (warp and weft are pulled apart, critical in satin and loose weaves). For workwear per EN ISO 13688 seam strengths > 300 N are standard; for high-visibility PPE per EN ISO 20471 usually > 500 N.
