Description
The yoke is a separately cut shaped panel used in the shoulder or hip area of shirts, blouses, jackets and jeans. It sits between the collar/waistband and the front or back panel and serves two purposes at once: it shapes the three-dimensional curve of shoulder or hip and stabilises the construction.
Classic dress shirts feature a back yoke, often built as a split yoke with the grain rotated so the shirt adapts to uneven shoulder heights. Western shirts and jean jackets treat the yoke as a design feature with contrast stitching. Five-pocket jeans also carry a hip yoke that bridges the difference between waistband circumference and seat, producing a cleaner rear silhouette.
