Regenerated nylon 6 by Italian Aquafil from old fishing nets, carpets and textile waste — chemical recycling.
Description
ECONYL® is the recyclate fibre launched in 2011 by Italian fibre producer Aquafil (Arco/Slovenia). Feedstocks are decommissioned fishing nets (ghost nets), carpet remnants, nylon cutting waste and industrial polyamide off-spec goods.
Unlike mechanically recycled PET, polyamide 6 is chemically broken back down to the monomer caprolactam and re-polymerised — resulting in quality identical to virgin nylon and repeatable as often as required without quality loss. According to Aquafil, producing 10,000 t of ECONYL® saves about 70,000 barrels of crude oil. Applications: swimwear, sports leggings, backpacks, carpets and automotive interiors. In 2025 Aquafil started a plant in Slovenia to separate nylon from elastane.
