Description

Polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) is a semi-crystalline high-performance thermoplastic spun into fibres (trade names Ryton®, Torcon®, Procon®) with outstanding chemical and thermal resistance. PPS fibres withstand continuous contact with acids and bases at virtually any concentration and temperatures of about 190 °C in continuous use, up to 220 °C in short peaks. Melting point is around 285 °C, the fibre is inherently flame-retardant (LOI approx. 34).

Uses are almost entirely technical: filter media for flue-gas cleaning in coal power plants and cement works, wet felts in the paper industry, insulation fabrics, electrolysis membranes. In apparel, PPS appears as a heat-shield inner layer in fire service and industrial protection wear and as filter overalls for cement and chemical work. Because of the narrow civilian market, PPS is barely visible in consumer garments.

  • Continuous service temperature: up to ~190 °C
  • Melting point: ~285 °C
  • LOI: ~34 (flame-resistant)
  • Chemically almost inert (acids/bases)
