Very fine, lightweight plain-weave fabric (60-100 g/m2) of long-staple cotton or linen, classic for blouses, handkerchiefs and baby wear.
Description
Batiste is a very densely and finely woven plain-weave fabric, named after the French weaver Jean-Baptiste Chambray from Cambrai (13th century). It uses fine, long-staple cotton yarns (typically Nm 100-160) or linen. Weight is 60-100 g/m²; the hand is cool, smooth and slightly translucent.
Batiste is used for high-end women's blouses, men's shirts (night shirts, boxer shorts), ecclesiastical textiles, handkerchiefs, traditional dress and baby wear. It is characterised by a very soft, refined hand while offering decent tensile strength thanks to a high thread count (often > 60 threads/cm).
