Description

Cheviot is a robust, slightly napped woollen fabric originally made from the wool of Scottish-English Cheviot mountain sheep. The wool fibre is medium-fine, long-staple and slightly crimped — producing a warm, grainy, often heathered cloth with a rough but not scratchy hand. The weave is usually twill or herringbone, occasionally plain.

Classically pure Cheviot wool (worsted or woollen), today also blended with other wools and man-made fibres. Weights 280-450 g/m². The look recalls Harris Tweed but is softer and less rustic; cheviot counts as a tweed relative with a stronger business character.

Uses: jackets, coats, suits, skirts, kilts, hunting clothes and rugged sports jackets. In British menswear cheviot is a classic for country suits and land-wear jackets that combines dress-appropriate wear with ruggedness.
