Grosgrain & taffeta ribbon (details)
Also known as: Grosgrain ribbon, Petersham, Corded ribbon
Ribbons in rib weave with heavy weft and fine warp — recognisable by fine transverse ribs; matt, robust, resistant to curling when tied, a classic trim on hats, blazer edges and medals.
Description
In grosgrain or rib ribbon a noticeably heavier weft and a finer warp form the characteristic transverse ribs in plain weave. The warp lies dense while the weft (often doubled) pushes up as a rib — the result is a matt, dense surface with a distinctly firm hand. Grosgrain differs from glossy satin ribbon precisely by this matt look and greater stiffness.
Taffeta ribbon is also woven in plain weave but with warp and weft of nearly equal weight, giving it a smoother, shinier and rustling appearance — typical for gift-bow ribbon, dress belts and decoration. Thanks to its pronounced ribs, grosgrain remains dimensionally stable when tied and is therefore the preferred choice for hat bands (petersham), blazer lapel edges, medal ribbons, trophies, cummerbunds and heavy-duty trims.
- Weave: plain weave with weft noticeably heavier than warp
- Petersham: narrower, more flexible grosgrain for inside hat bands
- Typical widths: 3 mm up to 100 mm and beyond
- Material: silk (historic), viscose, polyester, nylon, cotton
