Description

Jacquard denotes not a specific weave but a production process in which every warp thread can be lifted or lowered individually on a Jacquard machine (invented by Joseph-Marie Jacquard, 1804). This allows arbitrarily complex patterns — from damask through brocade to figurative pictures — to be woven directly into the fabric without printing.

A distinction is made between woven jacquard (classic damask, brocade, tie silk) and knitted jacquard (colour-change pattern knits). Woven jacquard often uses combinations of satin, twill and plain areas for contrast (damask: matt ground, lustrous pattern). Thread counts are high (60-140/cm) with fine filament yarns (silk, viscose, polyester).

Weights range from 80 g/m² (tie silk) to 400 g/m² (upholstery). Uses: ties, foulards, blouses, waistcoat backs, bed linen (damask), coat linings, upholstery. In apparel, jacquard is often used for subtle tonal patterns or as a statement textile. The Jacquard mechanism is regarded as a forerunner of computer punch cards.
