Acetate (CA)

Semi-synthetic fibre from acetylated cellulose with silky hand — classic lining and fashion fabrics of the 1920s.
Description
Acetate (fibre code CA) is produced by acetylating cellulose with acetic acid and acetic anhydride. First synthesised by Paul Schützenberger in 1865; industrial textile fibre since the 1920s (brand Celanese by the Dreyfus brothers). Chemically it is usually cellulose acetate with a degree of substitution around 2.4.
Acetate is typically dry-spun from acetone. It has a silky lustre, good drape and low elasticity. Key textile uses are lining and dress fabrics, plus cigarette filters (around 4.5 trillion filters per year) and film substrates. Downsides: low wet strength, sensitive to acetone, sticks under too hot an iron.
