Basalt fibre

Also known as: Basalt continuous fibre, BCF

Mineral continuous fibre spun from molten basalt, non-flammable, with tensile strength between glass and carbon fibre.

Description

Basalt fibre is produced by melt-spinning crushed basalt rock at around 1450–1500 °C; the melt is drawn through platinum-rhodium bushings into continuous filaments of 10–20 µm. Industrial production started in 1985 (Kyiv); after declassification in 1995 also outside eastern Europe.

Tensile strength is 2.8–3.1 GPa, placing basalt between glass and carbon fibre at significantly lower manufacturing cost. Basalt fibre is inherently non-flammable, chemically resistant and asbestos-free. Uses: heat protection textiles, technical composites (skateboards, snowboards, wind turbine blades), concrete reinforcement and hot-gas filtration.

  • Mineral fibre of SiO₂, Al₂O₃, CaO, MgO, Fe₂O₃
  • Tensile strength 2.8–3.1 GPa, filament diameter 10–20 µm
  • Non-flammable, continuous service up to about 700 °C
  • Heat protection, composites, concrete

In apparel, basalt fibre is used almost exclusively in heat-protection gloves and welding blankets.
