Description

Carbon fibre textiles are flat fabrics made of pure carbon filaments. The fibres are produced from polyacrylonitrile (PAN) or pitch by multi-stage pyrolysis at 1,000–3,000 °C and consist of at least 92 % carbon. A typical filament is 5–10 µm thin; in textiles, tows of 1k, 3k, 6k or 12k filaments (rovings) are woven, classically in plain, twill (2/2) or satin weave.

Key data: tensile strength 3,500–7,000 MPa, Young's modulus 230–600 GPa, density only 1.75–1.95 g/cm³ (about a quarter that of steel at similar tensile strength). Carbon fabrics are electrically conductive, chemically resistant and thermally stable up to about 500 °C. Apparel uses: technical panels in motorsport suits, motorcycle protectors, safety helmets, reinforced gloves, EMI-shielding garments. As a structural material (CFRP) carbon fabrics are laminated with epoxy resin.
