EVA
Also known as: Ethylene vinyl acetate, EVA foam, EVA copolymer
Elastic thermoplastic copolymer of ethylene and vinyl acetate, often foamed for soles, padding and coatings.
Description
EVA is a copolymer of ethylene and vinyl acetate and belongs to the thermoplastic elastomer family. The vinyl acetate share determines its properties: a low share gives polyethylene-like plastics, a high share soft, rubber-like materials.
In the textile and apparel sector EVA is used mainly as foam in shoe soles, sports padding, backpack backs and seat pads. Coated EVA films serve as a waterproof, PVC-free alternative in rain ponchos, shower curtains and water-repellent bags. EVA is light, permanently elastic, temperature-stable between about −40 °C and +60 °C and can be thermally sealed.
- Copolymer of ethylene and vinyl acetate
- Soft, permanently elastic, light
- Waterproof and heat-sealable
- PVC-free alternative
Production is petroleum-based; recycled shares and plant-based feedstocks (bio-ethylene from sugar cane) are gaining importance.
