Glass fibre (textile)

Inorganic chemical fibre made from special glass, used as a heat-resistant and high-strength reinforcement in technical textiles.
Description
Glass fibres are drawn from molten special glass (E-glass, S-glass, R-glass etc.) at around 1200 °C through platinum-rhodium bushings. They have been in industrial use since the 1930s and are today the world's most widely used reinforcement fibre by volume.
Typical values: density 2.45–2.58 g/cm³, tensile strength 1.8–5 GPa, modulus 70–90 GPa. Textile glass fibre is processed as rovings, non-wovens or wovens into fire blankets, welding apparel, heat-protection gloves, technical filters and reinforcements in boats, wind turbine blades and automotive parts (GRP). Load-bearing apparel use is limited, as the fibre is brittle and can produce splinters.
