Carbon fibre (textile)

Very stiff fibre made from carbonised polyacrylonitrile (PAN), base of CFRP composites in sports, aerospace and motorsport.
Description
Carbon fibres are industrially produced continuous filaments of pure carbon. Today the precursor is mostly polyacrylonitrile (PAN), stabilised in air (200–300 °C), carbonised (up to 1500 °C) and optionally graphitised (>2000 °C) into a graphite-like carbon structure. Individual filaments are 5–9 µm thin.
Typical values: density 1.8 g/cm³, tensile strength 3500–4600 MPa, modulus 230–500 GPa. Carbon fibre is processed into CFRP composites — Boeing 787 fuselage sections, F1 chassis, sporting goods, bike frames. As a textile material it appears in gloves, conductive compression wear and dissipative workwear (EN 1149).

Recycling is possible (pyrolysis) but technically demanding and not yet large-scale industrial.
