Description
Meta-aramid is the fibre class of aromatic polyamides where the amide groups are attached to the benzene ring in the meta position. Chemically it is poly-meta-phenylene isophthalamide; the meta arrangement gives a less strongly aligned crystalline structure than in para-aramids, yielding higher elongation, easier textile processing and much lower stiffness.
Meta-aramids are inherently flame retardant, char without melting and keep this property through any number of wash cycles. Trade names include Nomex® (DuPont™, since 1967), Teijinconex® (Teijin, since 1972) and Kermel® (based on polyamide-imide, a related class). Applications: firefighter turnouts, motorsport suits, protective wear for electricians and military pilots. Typical blends: 93 % Nomex® / 5 % Kevlar® / 2 % antistatic (Type III A).
