Regenerated cellulose fibre from beech wood with high wet strength, softer than classic viscose.
Description
Modal is a regenerated cellulose fibre obtained mainly from beech wood — the Austrian producer Lenzing AG with the brand Lenzing Modal® is often cited. Chemically the cellulose is dissolved in sodium hydroxide and carbon disulphide, spun and regenerated; a modified viscose process with higher wet strength.
The fibre is particularly soft, skin-friendly, moisture regulating and colour-fast. Modal is often blended with cotton, elastane or polyester and is found in underwear, T-shirts, bed linen and sports functional wear. The higher wet strength makes modal more dimensionally stable and durable in the wash than classic viscose.
