Description

Neoprene is the historical DuPont™ trademark for polychloroprene (CR), a synthetic rubber developed in 1930. In textiles neoprene is best known as a closed-cell foam laminated on both sides with stretch textiles (nylon, polyester).

The foam core consists of millions of small gas bubbles and provides excellent thermal insulation and buoyancy. Neoprene composites are used for wetsuits, surf shirts, waders, shoes, elbow and knee supports and technical insulation. Material thickness ranges from 1 mm for tops to 7 mm for winter wetsuits.

  • Synthetic chloroprene rubber foam
  • Waterproof, elastic and thermally insulating
  • Made into neoprene composite with textile lamination
  • Resistant to oils and many chemicals

Alternatives such as limestone-based neoprene (Yulex®) or plant-based Yulex® natural rubber reduce the petroleum share and are increasingly used in sustainable collections.
